Some customers may be experiencing a change in the taste and odor of their water. This taste comes from a compound called Geosmin. It is the same compound that gives beets their earthy flavor. It is a nuisance problem that occurs seasonally in water supplies due to algae activities in source waters. Palmdale Water District is typically immune to this nuisance due to the addition of Granular Activated Carbon to its Water Treatment Plant in 2009. During normal operations Granular Activated Carbon removes this taste and odor; however, this process was offline briefly on November 6th and 7th and has since been restored to service. This taste and odor may linger for a few days as the water passes through the system. Despite the aesthetic disruption the water meets all health standards and is safe to drink. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
